Woman and Demcracy
When you think about the United states of America there is lots of different things that come to mind. Many Americans say the first thing that comes to mind is the word democracy. Democracy is “a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.” Where does a word like democracy come from? Well, democracy is a greek word. It actually is two greek words in one. Demos and Kratia. Demos is the greek word for people, while Kratia is greek for power or authority. When it all comes down to it, democracy is a government ran by and for the people. Democracy was more than that though. There is a term called “ Direct Democracy”.
Direct Democracy is “a system in which citizens meet to discuss all policy, and then make decisions by majority rule.” The founding father’s took that a changed it around a little bit however. They thought to themselves “ How can Direct Democracy be used in a big populated place like the United States of America? When Democracy was first brought out, the founding fathers actually feared on how it was exactly going to work. James madison said in federalist #10 that “..instability, injustice, and confusion ...have in truth been the mortal disease under which popular governments everywhere perished..." In our system there is two words. Representatives, and Republic. We as the people pick who we want to represent us and our country, and it is their patriotic duty to serve us and this country well.
Direct Democracy still had one flaw. Everyone was considered a citizen. If you were of the male gender that is. How is democracy supposed to be for the people and give power and authority to the people if only the male gender is looked at? In a democracy, everyone is supposed to be treated equally, but woman are still not being treated fair. As we all know, The united States gained it’s independence from Great Britain on July 4th 1776. Why is it that it wasn’t until August 18th, 1920 that women got their right to vote? History.com states “It was not until 1848 that the movement for women’s rights launched on a national level with a convention in Seneca Falls, New York, organized by abolitionists Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) and Lucretia Mott (1793-1880).” So after 72 years of being treated and bestowed with inequality, women finally stood up for themselves and said “this is enough” We want equality for everyone and we want it now. In the second paragraph of the declaration of independence, it says “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Were Women not entitled to these rights as well?
Even today women still aren’t treated equal. One great example is Hillary Clinton. If you don’t know, Hillary Clinton is one of the most iconic political figures in modern times. There is an article on the washington post website, giving reasons why hillary clinton should not run for president. The article starts out saying “ The reasons for Hillary Clinton to run are obvious: she’d be in the most powerful position in the world and would have the ability to impact public policy in a way no other position allows. And of course she’d be making history as the first woman President.” What makes her unfit to do a man’s job? Those first couple of sentences summed it all up. Her being a female, she’s unfit to be under the pressure of running the country. Presidency is the most important, if not, highest position in democracy. If you are president, you play the biggest role in democracy. It is your job to make sure democracy stays in place. You ensure that everyone is treated equal, and you do so by following the constitution. Saying she is unfit to ensure that is happening by itself is a hypocrisy.
We as People of the United states all have a right to be treated as one. The document that defines our country reflects that. The first three words are “We the people”. If we the people means everyone that is a citizen of the united states of america, then that should include men as well as woman!
